About Us

1982 - 83: President Late) Rtn P.M. Muthiah

Theme: Mankind is One – Build Bridges of Friendship

Ann: (Late) Rajammal                     Governor:   Rtn. R. Ratnam

  • Parent club: Rotary Club of Madras West
  • Initiated by PDG Bhoja Shetty, who later became the GSR (Governor's Special Representative) of the club
  • Started with 32 members.
  • Received Charter: April 12th, 1982
  • PP Muthiah was the Charter President & Rtn Shivshankar (later known as Shivshankar Baba) was the first Secretary.
  • Venue for Regular Meetings:  Queen's Hotel, Nungambakkam Later shifted to Hotel Connemar
  • Yearly subscription: Rs 400
  •  Presented Food and Clothes to Balavihar
  • Each member paid only Rs.5/- towards cost of each meeting before the formal Charter!
  • Charter Nite was celebrated at the Taj Hotel
  • First fund raiser was a movie at Ega Theatre starring Rajesh Khanna. Total collection, a whopping sum of Rs.11,000/- in 1982!
  • First fellowship outing was to a private farm house on OMR

1983-84: President (Late) Rtn M.L. Shroff

Theme: Share Rotary – Serve People

Ann: Mrs. Shanthi                  Governor: Rtn. Bhoja Shetty

  • Installed by the then Vice Chancellor of Anna University, PP Mohan Shroff, was known as the "Man in White" from Bihar
  • He took pride in the fact that he was expelled from College for taking part in the Quit India Movement. A true freedom fighter! 
  • We are indeed honoured to have had him as one of our Presidents
  • Medicare centre started on March 4th, 1984.  Inaugurated by then Health Minister Dr. Hande
  • First Interact Club of Jaigopal Garodia Vivekananda Vidyalaya, Anna Nagar started
  • “For the Sake of Honour” Award presented to Cricketer K. Srikanth
  • Active participation of all the Anns
  • Received the Best Bulletin Award and His "Smile a While" column in the Tower Talk won him and the club many accolades.
  • Introduced the novel idea of "Fire Side" meetings to improve bonding between members.
  • Has left a behind a legacy of service in his sons, who are now pioneers in Organ donation.

1984-85: President (Late) Rtn M.K. Unnithan

Theme: Discover a New World of Service

Ann: Mrs. Sridevi                             Governor: Rtn. P V Purushothaman

  • Provided Drinking water facility to Thiruvalleswarar Nagar
  • Won First Prize in Attendance and 5 other awards
  • Appointed RI Chairman for 3H Measles Project in South India
  • Hosted PDG Paul McKelvey & Ann Marjorie at the club meeting
  • Pres. Unnithan organised the Rotary Youth Forum which was very well attended and brought many laurels to the Club.
  • Conducted “The National Quality Management “seminar for the Auto Industry. Nearly 200 Delegates from all over India attended. Club collected a whopping amount of Rs.4 lakhs nett. A major Fund Raiser indeed!
  • Had the honour of leading one of the largest contingents to the District Conference held in Salem - nearly 80 Rotarians & Anns from our club attended.
  • For the International Students Exchange Program, our club's candidate was selected to study at the Ohio University for two semesters.
  • Trip to Trivandrum to attend Pres Unnithan's daughter's wedding was most memorable.
  • After Presidentship, the District recognised Pres Unnithan by making him District Director - Community Service. Definitely an honour for a Club which was only three years old!

1985-86:  Rtn. President M Cherian

Theme: You Are the Key

  • Consolidated Medicare Centre and the Drinking water project.
  • Formed Corpus fund of Rs.50,000Inaugurated Interact Club of KPCVSS Became Paul Harris Fellow – First Rtn. M.K. Chetty and Second Rtn. Muthaiah Received 5 awards from the District
  • Pres Cherian conducted an All India Two Wheeler Exhibition for 4 days at the Abbotsbury Hall (currently, the Hyatt Hotel) on Mount Road jointly with Rotary Clubs of Madras West & Ambattur.
  • The exhibition was inaugurated by Mr. N.D. Tiwari, then Cabinet Minister. Our club was able to generate a sizeable amount as a fund raiser.
  • Completed the Thiruvalleswarar Nagar Drinking Water Distribution System which provided water for West Madras & Anna Nagar neighborhood.
  • The layout of Anna Nagar was unveiled at Roundtana by Thiru.  P. H. Pandian, Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
  • PP M.K. Chetty became the *first PHF of our club during this year.
  • First Lady Dr. Gita excelled by organising a memorable *Charter Nite celebration. 12 Ethnic Brides of India were showcased by our Anns.
  • Crowning glory of Pres Cherian's year was the starting of the Rotary Club of Anna Nagar Charitable Trust along with the Medicare Trust.
  • The corpus has grown from Rs.11,000 in 1986 to Rs. 40 lakhs today!!!

 

1986-87: Rtn. Dr. President Chidambaram

Theme:  Rotary Brings Hope

  • Organized Gangai Amaran’s Musical Nite as a major Fund Raising Programme
  • Five needy children trained in Television Repair and Course on Public Speaking conducted for Interactors
  • Youth Merit Award presented to Mr. Stephen Vidyasagar of Udavum Karangal
  • Registered the Rotary Club of Anna Nagar Charitable Trust
  • Dr. Chidambaram is an alumnus of Manipal. First Lady, Ann Meena used to be a culinary expert specialising in baking
  • The Rotary Youth Merit Award was given to Mr. Vidyaakar of Udavumn Karangal
  • High point of the year was the Grand Fund Raiser- *Gangai Amaran Musical Nite, organised by PP Radhey Mohan & team at Music Academy.
  • Artists of the movie "Samsaram Adhu Minsaram" were all honoured making it a Star studded nite.
  • As part of the International Service Project, free books were sent to Australian school children
  • Rotary Village Core (predecessor to RCC) was started at Pammadukulam in the neighbourhood of Red Hills
  • Dr. Chidambaram was the GSR of our sponsored club -   Rotary Club of Madras North West
